Hypothesis Test for Test of Independence01:16

Hypothesis Test for Test of Independence

The test of independence is a chi-square-based test used to determine whether two variables or factors are independent or dependent. This hypothesis test is used to examine the independence of the variables. One can construct two qualitative survey questions or experiments based on the variables in a contingency table. The goal is to see if the two variables are unrelated (independent) or related (dependent). The null and alternative hypotheses for this test are:
H0: The two variables (factors)...
Longitudinal Research02:20

Longitudinal Research

Sometimes we want to see how people change over time, as in studies of human development and lifespan. When we test the same group of individuals repeatedly over an extended period of time, we are conducting longitudinal research. Longitudinal research is a research design in which data-gathering is administered repeatedly over an extended period of time. For example, we may survey a group of individuals about their dietary habits at age 20, retest them a decade later at age 30, and then again...
Aggression01:47

Aggression

Humans engage in aggression when they seek to cause harm or pain to another person. Aggression takes two forms depending on one’s motives: hostile or instrumental. Hostile aggression is motivated by feelings of anger with intent to cause pain; a fight in a bar with a stranger is an example of hostile aggression. In contrast, instrumental aggression is motivated by achieving a goal and does not necessarily involve intent to cause pain (Berkowitz, 1993); a contract killer who murders for hire...
Close Relationships and Culture01:29

Close Relationships and Culture

Culture shapes how people approach attraction, choose partners, and build long-term relationships. While some preferences in mate selection appear consistent across cultures, such as men valuing physical attractiveness and women emphasizing financial resources, cultural contexts influence how these preferences are expressed and prioritized. Marriage extends beyond romantic ideals in many societies and is deeply embedded in social, economic, and religious frameworks. The Role of Culture in Mate...
Theory of Romantic Attachment in Adulthood03:34

Theory of Romantic Attachment in Adulthood

Attachment is a long-standing connection or bond with others. While Attachment Theory was conceived in developmental psychology to describe infant-caregiver bonding, it's been extended into adulthood to include romantic relationships.
Stress Prevention and Stress Management Techniques IV01:26

Stress Prevention and Stress Management Techniques IV

Stress often leads to unhealthy habits like smoking, excessive drinking, and overeating, which offer short-term relief but ultimately increase long-term health risks. These behaviors create a cycle that temporarily lowers stress levels but can result in severe long-term health consequences. Breaking these habits is essential to reduce the risk of chronic diseases and improve overall well-being. Three primary changes that support better health include quitting smoking, reducing alcohol intake,...

Summary

Marital aggression and problem drinking are bidirectionally linked. Increased problem drinking can worsen aggression, while aggression may lead to more drinking, especially in couples with high male drinking.

Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Addiction Research
  • Family Studies

Background:

  • Marital aggression and alcohol problems are significant issues in relationships.
  • Understanding the temporal dynamics between these issues is crucial for intervention.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To examine the bidirectional relationship between marital aggression and alcohol problems over a two-year period.
  • To identify specific patterns of influence between different types of aggression and problem drinking in couples.

Main Methods:

  • Longitudinal study with 158 couples over two years.
  • Self-report and partner-reports used to assess marital aggression and alcohol problems.
  • Statistical analysis to determine predictive relationships between variables at different time points.

Main Results:

  • Bidirectional links were found between marital aggression and problem drinking.
  • Husband's problem drinking predicted increased physical aggression; wife's problem drinking predicted decreased verbal aggression.
  • Physical aggression predicted increased problem drinking for both wives and husbands (under certain conditions).

Conclusions:

  • Problem drinking may impair couples' ability to manage disagreements, potentially leading to aggression.
  • Marital problems may increase drinking as a stress-coping mechanism.
  • Couples with higher male problem drinking may face elevated risks.
