Academic goals significantly impact learning quality. Task-oriented learning goals positively correlate with all learning quality indicators, while other goal types show a negative relationship.
Area of Science:
- Educational Psychology
- Learning Sciences
Background:
- Understanding the relationship between students' academic goals and learning quality is crucial for effective pedagogy.
- Previous research has explored various facets of goal orientation, but a comprehensive analysis linking diverse goal types to multiple learning quality indicators is needed.
Purpose of the Study:
- To analyze the relationship between academic goal levels (high, moderate, low) and key indicators of learning quality.
- To determine the extent to which different academic goals (learning, work-avoidance, performance-approach, performance-avoidance) relate to effort regulation, task value, meta-cognitive self-regulation, self-efficacy, learning control beliefs, and time/study environment management.
Main Methods:
- Quantitative analysis of data from 632 university students (70% female, 30% male, mean age 21.22).
- Assessment of various academic goals and their correlation with indicators of learning quality, including effort regulation, task value, and self-regulation strategies.
Main Results:
- Learning goals, also known as task orientation, demonstrated a positive association with all assessed indicators of learning quality.
- While not all indicators showed significant relationships with work-avoidance, performance-approach, and performance-avoidance goals, a consistent trend indicated that higher levels of these goals were linked to lower levels of learning quality indicators.
Conclusions:
- Task-oriented academic goals are strongly associated with higher learning quality.
- Non-task-oriented goals may negatively influence various aspects of the learning process, suggesting a need to foster intrinsic motivation and task engagement.
