Gallstones impair gallbladder motor function and bile flow dynamics, even in asymptomatic individuals. Quantitative scintigraphy revealed decreased gallbladder ejection fraction and prolonged emptying times in patients with gallstones.
Area of Science:
- Gastroenterology
- Hepatology
- Nuclear Medicine
Background:
- Gallstones are common, often asymptomatic.
- Gallbladder motor function and bile flow are crucial for digestive health.
Purpose of the Study:
- To assess the impact of asymptomatic gallstones on gallbladder motor function.
- To evaluate alterations in bile flow dynamics in patients with gallstones.
Main Methods:
- Quantitative hepatobiliary scintigraphy used in 24 asymptomatic gallstone patients and 20 healthy controls.
- Key parameters measured: gallbladder ejection fraction (GBEF), gallbladder visualization time (GBVT), gallbladder time to peak activity (GBT(max)), gallbladder half emptying time (GBT(1/2)), and transit time of bile to duodenum (TTBD).
Main Results:
- Significant differences in gallbladder function parameters (GBEF, GBVT, GBT(max), GBT(1/2)) between patients and controls.
- Patients showed decreased GBEF and prolonged GBVT, GBT(max), and GBT(1/2).
- No significant difference in transit time of bile to the duodenum (TTBD) was observed.
Conclusions:
- Asymptomatic gallstones can lead to impaired gallbladder filling and emptying.
- Motor dysfunction of the gallbladder may be an early indicator of gallstone disease, even without clinical symptoms.
