Self-report inventories are objective personality assessments that use multiple-choice items or numbered scales, typically ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). They are often called Likert scales after Rensis Likert. These inventories are widely used due to their ease of administration and cost-effectiveness. Background:

Idiopathic Environmental Intolerance (IEI) presents a complex challenge in diagnosis and research.
Specific symptom investigation is crucial for understanding IEI heterogeneity.

Purpose of the Study:

To develop and validate the Idiopathic Environmental Intolerance Symptom Inventory (IEISI) for assessing specific IEI symptoms.
To evaluate the psychometric properties of the IEISI.

Main Methods:

The IEISI was developed based on 82 candidate symptoms reported by participants with IEI.
Data were collected from 207 participants at test and 193 at retest.
Internal consistency, reliability, and validity were assessed.

Main Results:

A 27-item IEISI was finalized, grouped into five symptom categories.
The IEISI demonstrated satisfactory internal consistency, test-retest reliability, and concurrent validity.
Cluster analysis revealed two distinct subgroups within IEI patients.

Conclusions:

The IEISI is a reliable and valid instrument for studying symptom prevalence in IEI.
The findings support the IEISI as a practical tool for IEI research.
Further investigation into IEI subgroups is warranted.
