Tonsillitis I: Introduction01:30

Tonsillitis I: Introduction

Tonsillitis is inflammation of the tonsils, which are two lymphoid tissue masses at the back of the throat. This condition can cause discomfort and irritation in the throat.
Etiology
Three primary contributing factors have been identified.
Tonsillitis II: Management01:26

Tonsillitis II: Management

This lesson will focus on the different treatment options for managing tonsillitis, which typically depend on the cause and severity.
Chronic Pharyngitis01:23

Chronic Pharyngitis

Chronic pharyngitis refers to persistent inflammation of the pharyngial mucosa.
Etiology
It often arises from persistent viral or bacterial infections affecting sinuses and tonsils.
Additional contributing factors include inadequate dental hygiene, mouth breathing, recurring tonsillitis, allergic rhinitis, laryngopharyngeal reflux, and exposure to smoke, chemicals, and other environmental pollutants. Allergic reactions to pollen, mold, and pet dander, chronic cough, excessive voice usage,...
Acute Pharyngitis01:30

Acute Pharyngitis

Introduction
Acute pharyngitis is the inflammation of the back of the throat (pharynx), commonly resulting in a sore throat. It is a frequently encountered condition that prompts individuals to seek medical advice.
Classification
Acute pharyngitis can be categorized based on its underlying cause:
Suctioning the Nasopharyngeal Airway01:29

Suctioning the Nasopharyngeal Airway

Nasopharyngeal suctioning is a procedure to remove secretions from the upper part of the respiratory tract that the patient cannot clear independently. It helps maintain airway patency and prevents complications such as aspiration pneumonia.

Sputum Studies II: Culture and Sensitivity01:20

Sputum Studies II: Culture and Sensitivity

Description
Sputum culture and sensitivity is a medical procedure used to diagnose bacterial infections in the respiratory tract and select the most appropriate antibiotics for treatment. This process involves analyzing sputum samples of thick and opaque secretions produced in the lungs and airways. These samples are collected from patients and then sent to the laboratory for analysis.
The test can identify various pathogens responsible for respiratory infections, including Streptococcus,...

Summary

This study on tonsillectomy patients found recurrent sore throat most common. Staphylococcus aureus was the most frequent bacteria identified, though many cultures were sterile.

Area of Science:

  • Otorhinolaryngology
  • Microbiology

Background:

  • Tonsil problems are a common reason for tonsillectomy.
  • Understanding the microbial landscape of tonsillar infections is crucial for effective treatment.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the clinical presentations and microbial findings in patients undergoing tonsillectomy.
  • To identify the common organisms associated with tonsillar issues.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 20 patients (age 3-54) who underwent tonsillectomy.
  • Collection and culture of throat swabs during preoperative and postoperative periods.
  • Analysis of clinical symptoms including sleep apnoea, odynophagia, fever, and recurrent tonsillitis.

Main Results:

  • Recurrent sore throat was the most frequent clinical presentation.
  • Staphylococcus aureus was the most common organism isolated from superficial throat swabs (26.0%).
  • A significant percentage of cultures (69.0%) were sterile, likely due to prior antibiotic use; alpha-hemolytic streptococci were also identified (38.0%).
  • Conclusions:

    • Recurrent tonsillitis and sore throat are primary indications for tonsillectomy.
    • Superficial throat swabs may not always yield causative organisms, highlighting the potential impact of prior antibiotic treatment.
    • Further research comparing superficial and core swabs is warranted.
