Abstract:
Practical experience from and diagnostic yield of 65 transesophageal echocardiographies (TEE) performed routinely in 63 patients aged 10-84 are presented. TEE is performed after few preparations and with limited discomfort to the patient. Complications are rare. The results of TEE were compared with the results of conventional transthoracic echocardiography (TTE). Fifty per cent of the TEEs resulted in therapeutically relevant new information, and 25 per cent excluded suspected pathological states. The remaining 25 per cent gave more detailed information without immediate therapeutic consequences.
