This study explored how dancers and medical professionals communicate about injuries and recovery. Surveys were given to medical practitioners and dancers, revealing that communication between these groups is limited. Medical professionals rarely discussed a dancer’s injury with each other or with teachers and directors. Dancers often did not seek detailed explanations about their injuries and did not press for more information. Both groups believed dancers could benefit from learning more about anatomy. Current research has explored communication dynamics in healthcare settings, but few studies have focused on interactions between medical practitioners and dancers. While prior work has established that interdisciplinary communication is vital for patient outcomes, little is known about how this applies to dancers, who face unique physical demands. No prior work had resolved how medical professionals and dancers perceive their communication needs. That uncertainty drove this investigation into communication patterns between dancers and medical practitioners. It was already known that dancers often sustain injuries requiring medical attention, yet their interactions with healthcare providers remain under-researched. Purpose Of The Study:
The aim of this study was to examine how professional and pre-professional dancers communicate with medical practitioners and how these interactions influence recovery processes. The motivation for this study stemmed from the observation that dancers frequently encounter injuries but may not receive consistent or comprehensive medical advice. This study sought to investigate whether communication between dancers and medical professionals is sufficient for effective recovery. The researchers also aimed to determine if dancers and medical practitioners share a common understanding of injuries and treatment.
