Abstract:
Hyperglycemia involves an increased risk of macrovascular and microvascular diseases. Despite convincing epidemiologic evidence, research results of the efficacy of treatment of hyperglycemia on cardiovascular events are conflicting. The results published in 2008 of large studies on the treatment of hyperglycemia have caused debate. According to the ACCORD study, intensive treatment of hyperglycemia can be deleterious in high-risk patients with a long history of the disease. Long-term results of the UKPDS study speak for intensive care at the early stage. A comprehensive and early medical care will yield the best long-term results in the treatment of type 2 diabetes.
