Modeling in Therapy01:26

Modeling in Therapy

Modeling, a key technique in therapy, uses observational learning to help clients acquire and practice new skills by watching therapists demonstrate desired behaviors. This approach, rooted in Albert Bandura's concept of vicarious learning, plays a significant role in therapeutic interventions for various psychological conditions, including social anxiety, ADHD, and depression.

Treatment Strategies for Psychological Disorders01:24

Treatment Strategies for Psychological Disorders

Treatment approaches for psychological disorders fall into three main categories: psychological, biological, and sociocultural. Each approach targets different aspects of mental health, requiring varying levels of education and training.
Psychological therapies focus on modifying emotions, thoughts, and behaviors through talking, interpreting, listening, rewarding, challenging, and modeling. Clinical psychologists, counselors, and social workers commonly practice psychotherapy. Clinical...
Drug Dependence01:17

Drug Dependence

Medications are typically administered to achieve therapeutic effects. Some drugs can modify an individual's mood and perception, frequently resulting in various enjoyable experiences. However, this can result in drug dependency, a condition marked by continuous drug use despite potential negative consequences. Drug dependency primarily falls into two categories: psychological and physical dependence. Psychological dependence occurs when the pleasurable feelings induced by the drug...
Drug Therapy01:28

Drug Therapy

The advent of drug therapy has profoundly shaped modern mental health care, providing targeted treatments for a range of psychological disorders. Psychotherapeutic drugs, classified into antianxiety, antidepressant, and antipsychotic medications, address symptoms across anxiety disorders, mood disorders, and schizophrenia. While these medications have transformed patient outcomes, they require careful management due to their potential side effects and limitations.

Psychosis: Goals of Pharmacotherapy

Antipsychotic drugs are a crucial treatment method for acute and chronic psychoses, bipolar illness, and behavioral disorders. The selection of these drugs depends on several factors, including the state of the disease, clinical judgment, possible drug interactions, and the patient's sensitivity to adverse effects. In immediate scenarios, such as delirium and dementia, short-term treatment with low doses of high-potency typical or atypical agents can effectively manage symptom exacerbation. For...

Techniques of Therapeutic Communication II: Focusing, Paraphrasing, and Summarizing

Focusing involves centering a conversation on a message's critical elements or concepts. Focusing is valuable if the talk is vague or patients begin to repeat themselves. Sometimes, when patients are asked about their symptoms, they may go off-topic and try to tell their entire life story. Respectfully, the nurse should bring the conversation back into focus.
This therapeutic technique can also be used when a patient brings up pertinent information during a health-related conversation. The...

Area of Science:

  • Addiction Medicine
  • Psychology
  • Counseling Techniques

Background:

  • Illicit drug use remains a significant public health concern.
  • Effective counseling techniques are crucial for substance use disorder treatment.
  • Visual representation strategies show promise in therapeutic interventions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate two visual representation counseling techniques: free mapping and free plus guide mapping.
  • To determine the effectiveness of these techniques in reducing illicit drug use among patients in methadone maintenance treatment.
  • To compare visual mapping techniques against standard treatment as usual.

Main Methods:

  • Eighty-two participants in methadone maintenance treatment were randomly assigned to receive standard care or standard care plus visual mapping.
  • Counselors delivered all treatment types to control for counselor variability.
  • Illicit drug use was assessed via urinalysis and self-report data six months post-treatment.

Main Results:

  • Participants receiving standard treatment supplemented with free plus guide mapping showed significantly lower opiate use.
  • Both urinalysis and self-report data corroborated the reduction in opiate use.
  • The free mapping condition did not yield statistically significant differences compared to standard care.

Conclusions:

  • The free plus guide mapping visual representation strategy is effective in reducing opiate use.
  • This visual technique offers a valuable addition to standard addiction treatment protocols.
  • The study validates the concurrent reliability of self-report measures for illicit drug use.
