Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) effectively prevented panic attacks and anxiety in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients. This brief intervention significantly improved mental health outcomes for individuals with COPD.
Area of Science:
- Pulmonary Medicine
- Psychiatry
- Behavioral Therapy
Background:
- Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is often associated with significant psychological distress, including anxiety and panic symptoms.
- Panic-spectrum psychopathology can exacerbate COPD symptoms and negatively impact quality of life.
- Pulmonary rehabilitation is a standard treatment, but psychological interventions may offer additional benefits.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the efficacy of a brief Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) intervention in preventing panic attacks and anxiety symptoms in patients with COPD.
- To assess the impact of CBT on panic disorder, depressive symptoms, catastrophic cognitions, quality of life, and hospital admissions in COPD patients.
Main Methods:
- A randomized controlled trial involving 41 COPD patients post-pulmonary rehabilitation.
- Participants were assigned to either a four-session CBT intervention or a routine care condition.
- Assessments were conducted at baseline, post-intervention, and at 6-, 12-, and 18-month follow-ups.
Main Results:
- No CBT group participants experienced panic attacks during the 18-month follow-up, compared to 60% in the routine care group.
- Significant reductions in anxiety symptoms and catastrophic cognitions were observed in the CBT group at all follow-ups.
- The CBT group also showed fewer hospital admissions between 6- and 12-month follow-ups.
Conclusions:
- A brief, targeted CBT intervention is effective in treating panic attacks in COPD patients.
- CBT can prevent the development and worsening of panic-spectrum psychopathology and anxiety symptoms in individuals with COPD.
- This intervention offers a valuable addition to the management of psychological comorbidities in COPD.
