This study found no significant link between using Ginkgo biloba extract (GBE) and having glaucoma. Further research is needed to confirm these findings on GBE and glaucoma association.
Area of Science:
- Ophthalmology
- Integrative Medicine
- Public Health
Background:
- Glaucoma is a leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide.
- Ginkgo biloba extract (GBE) is a popular herbal supplement with purported antioxidant and circulatory benefits.
- Previous research on GBE and glaucoma has yielded mixed results.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the association between self-reported Ginkgo biloba extract (GBE) use and the prevalence of glaucoma.
- To determine if GBE use is a significant factor in individuals diagnosed with glaucoma.
Main Methods:
- Utilized data from the 2002 National Health Interview Survey, a nationally representative sample.
- Analyzed self-reported GBE use within the past 12 months and glaucoma diagnosis.
- Employed crude and adjusted statistical models to assess the association, controlling for demographic and medical factors.
Main Results:
- Individuals with glaucoma were 26% less likely to report GBE use, but this difference was not statistically significant.
- After adjusting for confounding variables, no significant difference in GBE use was observed between glaucoma patients and controls.
- The study did not find a statistically significant association between GBE use and glaucoma prevalence.
Conclusions:
- Current findings do not support a significant relationship between recent Ginkgo biloba extract (GBE) use and glaucoma.
- Replication in prospective studies is recommended to validate these results.
- The efficacy of GBE as a treatment for glaucoma requires further investigation.
