Assessing stakeholder needs for the introduction of assisted reproductive technology legislation
1Infertility Treatment Authority, Victoria. tpetrillo@ita.org.au
Abstract:
Assisted reproductive technology (ART) legislation in Victoria, Australia, is currently under review. Due to the complex nature of ART legislation, careful planning is required to ensure key stakeholders understand the revisions to ART legislation in Victoria and that they have sufficient time to consider and implement necessary changes. Focus groups were conducted to assess the communication and education needs of the staff of places licensed to provide ART treatment in Victoria related to the introduction of new ART legislation and to inform the development of a supporting implementation strategy to meet those needs. Stakeholder needs were found to vary widely according to geographic location, size and structure of organisations. A range of education and communication strategies must be considered. A multi-pronged communication and education strategy is required to ensure that ART legislation is introduced effectively and that the needs of stakeholders are met.
