This study introduces disjunctive kriging (DK) for mapping indoor radon risk. This geostatistical method effectively creates probability maps for radon-prone areas, even with low spatial correlation.
Area of Science:
- Environmental Science
- Geostatistics
- Radiological Protection
Background:
- Maps of radon-prone areas are crucial for indoor radon risk management.
- Traditional methods for mapping radon risk have limitations.
Purpose of the Study:
- To illustrate the geostatistical method of disjunctive kriging (DK) for mapping radon-prone areas.
- To assess the influence of spatial correlation on probability map generation for indoor radon.
Main Methods:
- Disjunctive kriging (DK), a geostatistical method, was applied.
- The method was used for producing probability maps from indoor radon measurements.
- Spatial correlation's impact on results was specifically evaluated.
Main Results:
- Disjunctive kriging (DK) exploits spatial correlation and conserves unbiasedness.
- DK does not require lognormality of data and allows for smooth probability maps.
- Low spatial correlation was found to influence the results of radon-prone area mapping.
Conclusions:
- Disjunctive kriging (DK) is a suitable method for mapping radon-prone areas.
- The application demonstrated the utility of DK in real-world radon measurement campaigns.
- DK provides a robust approach for indoor radon risk assessment and management.
