Bioactive glass-ceramic bone filler showed complete incorporation after 7 years. It is suitable for metaphyseal defects but not diaphyseal defects in long bones.
Area of Science:
- Biomaterials Science
- Orthopedic Surgery
- Medical Imaging
Background:
- Bone defects pose significant challenges in orthopedic surgery.
- Bioactive materials offer potential for bone defect repair.
- Oxyhydroxyapatite glass-ceramic is a candidate for bone void filling.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the long-term behavior and integration of bioactive oxyhydroxyapatite glass-ceramic.
- To assess its efficacy in filling long bone defects after curettage of bone cysts.
Main Methods:
- A cohort of 17 patients received the glass-ceramic implant.
- Evaluation involved three-phase bone scintigraphy.
- Radiographic and clinical assessments were combined with scintigraphy.
Main Results:
- Complete incorporation of the glass-ceramic was observed at a mean 7-year follow-up.
- Higher uptake ratios were noted in diaphyseal defects (2.07+/-0.62) compared to metaphyseal defects (1.31+/-0.25).
- Higher uptake ratios were also observed in patients with persistent pain (2.07+/-0.69) versus those without (1.40+/-0.30).
Conclusions:
- Bioactive oxyhydroxyapatite glass-ceramic is well-incorporated in long bone defects.
- The material is suitable for metaphyseal defect filling.
- It is not recommended for diaphyseal defect filling due to observed differences in integration and patient outcomes.
