Area of Science:
- Primary Care Medicine
- Addiction Treatment
- Public Health
Background:
- Addiction treatment is often siloed, creating barriers to care.
- Integrating addiction services into primary care settings can improve accessibility.
- Family physicians play a crucial role in managing chronic conditions, including substance use disorders.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate patient outcomes within an addiction shared care program.
- To assess the effectiveness of family physician-managed addiction interventions in primary care.
- To determine the impact of shared care on substance use reduction.
Main Methods:
- Prospective cohort study design.
- Inclusion of patients referred to a primary care-based addiction shared care program.
- Interventions included counseling, medical detoxification, and pharmacotherapy.
- Self-reported substance use measured at intake and 3-4 month follow-up.
Main Results:

- Decreased opioid consumption and initiation of methadone treatment for problem opioid users.
- Significant decline in problematic benzodiazepine and other drug use.
- No significant change in problematic cannabis or cocaine use.
Conclusions:
- Shared care represents a promising strategy for delivering addiction interventions within primary care.
- This model facilitates improved patient outcomes for substance use disorders.
- Further research with comprehensive follow-up and objective measures is recommended.
