The Cochlea01:13

The Cochlea

The cochlea is a coiled structure in the inner ear that contains hair cells—the sensory receptors of the auditory system. Sound waves are transmitted to the cochlea by small bones attached to the eardrum called the ossicles, which vibrate the oval window that leads to the inner ear. This causes fluid in the chambers of the cochlea to move, vibrating the basilar membrane.

    Summary

The Hybrid S cochlear implant preserves low-frequency hearing while improving high-frequency hearing loss. Acoustic plus electric (A + E) stimulation shows significant benefits for speech perception and music recognition.

    Area of Science:

    • Audiology
    • Biomedical Engineering
    • Neurosurgery

    Background:

    • Severe to profound high-frequency hearing loss requires innovative treatment.
    • The Hybrid S cochlear implant aims to preserve residual low-frequency hearing.
    • Acoustic plus electric (A + E) stimulation combines acoustic and electric hearing.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • Review findings from the Hybrid S cochlear implant clinical trial.
    • Evaluate surgical techniques, patient criteria, and hearing preservation.
    • Assess speech perception, music recognition, and neural plasticity.

    Main Methods:

    • Implantation of a short electrode array into the cochlear base.
    • Utilizing acoustic plus electric (A + E) stimulation.
    • Reviewing data from the first two stages of a US clinical trial.
