The Hypoxia-Inducible Factor 1-Alpha (HIF1A) Pro582Ser gene variant alone does not determine sprint ability. However, sprint performance is linked to an interaction between HIF1A Pro/Pro and ACTN3 RR genotypes.
Area of Science:
- Sports Science
- Human Genetics
- Molecular Biology
Background:
- Hypoxia-inducible factor 1 (HIF-1) is a key regulator of gene expression in response to low oxygen conditions.
- HIF-1 plays a role in cellular adaptation and has been implicated in athletic performance.
- Genetic variations in HIF1A and ACTN3 are potential determinants of athletic capabilities.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the frequency distribution of the HIF1A Pro582Ser polymorphism in Israeli athletes and controls.
- To examine the combined effect of HIF1A Pro582Ser and ACTN3 R577X genotypes on sprint performance.
- To determine if specific genotype combinations are associated with elite sprinting or endurance athletic status.
Main Methods:
- Genotyping analysis of HIF1A Pro582Ser (rs11549465) and ACTN3 R577X (rs1815739) polymorphisms.
- Comparison of genotype and allele frequencies among sprinters, endurance athletes, and healthy controls.
- Statistical analysis to assess genotype interactions and their association with athletic performance categories.
Main Results:
- No significant differences in HIF1A genotype or allele frequencies were observed among sprinters, endurance athletes, and controls.
- A significant interaction effect was found between HIF1A Pro582Ser and ACTN3 R577X genotypes concerning sprint performance.
- The combined HIF1A Pro/Pro and ACTN3 R/R genotype was significantly more prevalent in sprinters compared to other groups.
Conclusions:
- The HIF1A Pro582Ser polymorphism alone is not a critical determinant of sprint performance.
- Sprint performance appears to be influenced by the synergistic interaction between the HIF1A Pro/Pro genotype and the ACTN3 RR genotype.
- This interaction suggests a genetic predisposition for sprinting associated with specific combined genotypes.
