Abstract:
Microscopic hematuria is frequently seen during routine health check-ups. A recent epidemiological study has shown that the number of red blood cells in urine is inversely correlated with bone mineral density (BMD) in men and women over 50 years of age. This paper discusses mechanisms explaining the relationship between microscopic hematuria and BMD. Patients with urolithiasis have lower BMD than normal people, suggesting that calculi may cause both microscopic hematuria and decreased BMD. On the other hand, elderly individuals with albuminuria have a higher incidence of non-vertebral fracture, suggesting that renal insufficiency may adversely affect BMD. Nevertheless, evidence on renal and urological risk factors for osteoporosis is sparse, and thus further research is needed.
