Like autosomes, sex chromosomes contain a variety of genes necessary for normal body function. When a mutation in one of these genes results in biological deficits, the disorder is considered sex-linked.

Group polarization is the strengthening of an original group attitude following the discussion of views within a group (Teger & Pruitt, 1967). That is, if a group initially favors a viewpoint, after discussion the group consensus is likely a stronger endorsement of the viewpoint. Conversely, if the group was initially opposed to a viewpoint, group discussion would likely lead to stronger opposition.

A modern form of aggression is bullying. As you learn in your study of child development, socializing and playing with other children is beneficial for children’s psychological development. However, as you may have experienced as a child, not all play behavior has positive outcomes. Some children are aggressive and want to play roughly. Existing research covers internet use in child pornography distribution and pedophile networks, but less on subculture development.

Purpose of the Study:

To explore the subcultural norms and enculturation within the pedophile community.
To analyze how the internet fosters attitudes and justifications for relationships with children.

Main Methods:

Qualitative analysis of five web forums.
Forums were run by and for individuals identifying as pedophiles.

Main Results:

Pedophile subculture values support and encourage emotional and sexual relationships with minors.
These norms apply to both virtual and real-world interactions.
The internet serves as a key platform for pedophile enculturation and norm reinforcement.

Conclusions:

The internet plays a significant role in the formation and maintenance of pedophile subcultures.
Understanding these online communities is crucial for addressing the harms associated with pedophilia.
