Summary

Suicidal behavior is common in epilepsy patients, with over a third experiencing suicidal thoughts. Anxiety, depression, and multiple psychiatric diagnoses significantly increase this risk in people with epilepsy.

Background:

  • Epilepsy is linked to a higher suicide risk, but research on suicidal behavior in this population is limited.
  • Understanding the prevalence and associated factors of suicidal behavior in epilepsy is crucial for intervention.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the frequency of suicidal behavior (thoughts, plans, attempts) in individuals with epilepsy.
  • To identify characteristics associated with suicidal ideation in people with epilepsy.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of 139 individuals with epilepsy, identified from a previous survey of 171 patients, was assessed.
  • Data collection involved structured interviews and, for some participants, a second psychiatric evaluation.

Main Results:

  • Lifetime prevalence rates were: 36.7% for suicidal thoughts, 18.2% for suicidal plans, and 12.1% for suicide attempts.
  • Suicidal thoughts were strongly associated with anxiety (OR=3.3), depression (OR=4.8), and having two or more psychiatric diagnoses (OR=21.6).

Conclusions:

  • Suicidal behavior is a significant concern in people with epilepsy.
  • While epilepsy characteristics may play a role, co-occurring psychiatric conditions like anxiety and depression are key predictors of suicidal ideation.
