Replacing soybean meal (SBM) with hazelnut kernel oil meal (HKM) in broiler diets negatively impacts growth performance and carcass yield. Even 50% substitution with HKM is not recommended for commercial broiler diets.
Area of Science:
- Animal Science
- Poultry Nutrition
- Feed Science
Background:
- Soybean meal (SBM) is a primary protein source in broiler diets.
- Hazelnut kernel oil meal (HKM) is a potential alternative protein ingredient.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the effects of substituting soybean meal (SBM) with hazelnut kernel oil meal (HKM) in broiler diets.
- To determine the optimal level of HKM inclusion for broiler growth and carcass characteristics.
Main Methods:
- A six-week feeding trial with 450 one-day-old Ross 308 broiler chicks.
- Three dietary treatments: control SBM, 50% HKM substitution, and 100% HKM substitution.
- Evaluation of body weight gain, feed intake, feed conversion ratio, carcass yield, abdominal fat, and organ weights.
Main Results:
- Broiler growth performance (weight gain, feed intake, feed conversion ratio) was negatively affected by HKM inclusion (P < 0.05).
- Carcass yield and abdominal fat pad weights were significantly reduced in broilers fed HKM diets compared to SBM (P < 0.05).
- Edible inner organ weight was highest in broilers fed HKM diets (P < 0.05).
Conclusions:
- Soybean meal (SBM) cannot be replaced by hazelnut kernel oil meal (HKM) even at a 50% level in commercial broiler diets.
- HKM inclusion negatively impacts key growth and carcass parameters in broilers.
- Further research may be needed to explore potential benefits or modifications for HKM utilization in poultry feed.
