  • Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was used to scan 16 males with ASD and 16 typically developing (TD) males.
  • Participants performed implicit learning tasks with social and monetary rewards.

  • Children with ASD exhibited diminished neural responses to both social and monetary rewards, with a more pronounced reduction for social rewards (SR).
  • A deficit in frontostriatal response during social, but not monetary, rewarded learning was observed in ASD.

  • Data support the social motivation hypothesis, indicating diminished neural responses to SR in children with ASD.
