Implementing a current events project in pharmacotherapy enhanced pharmacy students' knowledge and presentation skills. This active learning approach significantly improved awareness of pharmacy practice-related current events.
Area of Science:
- Pharmacy Education
- Pharmacotherapy
- Infectious Diseases
Background:
- Traditional pharmacotherapy curricula may not fully integrate current events.
- Active learning strategies are increasingly recognized for enhancing student engagement and knowledge retention.
Purpose of the Study:
- To integrate and evaluate a current events project within a Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) pharmacotherapy course.
- To assess the impact of this project on student knowledge, awareness, and presentation skills.
Main Methods:
- Third-year PharmD students researched infectious disease-related current events.
- Students prepared and delivered written and verbal summaries of their research.
- Student performance was assessed via course examinations, quizzes, and self-assessment surveys.
Main Results:
- Student scores on current events material were comparable to or exceeded those on traditional material.
- A statistically significant increase in student awareness of pharmacy practice current events was observed.
- Students demonstrated a significant improvement in understanding the process of preparing and presenting information.
Conclusions:
- The current events project effectively served as an active learning tool in pharmacotherapy education.
- This initiative significantly enhanced students' awareness of relevant current events and their ability to communicate complex information.
