Internet searches for health information are increasingly common.
Understanding the relationship between online search behavior and real-world healthcare utilization is crucial.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the temporal and geographic associations between Google searches for specific medications and healthcare utilization.
To assess if search query data can serve as a proxy for pharmaceutical revenue and community healthcare use.

Main Methods:

A retrospective longitudinal study analyzed Google Trends and Google Insights for Search data for Lipitor and simvastatin.
Search query trends were compared with Lipitor revenues and Medicare service utilization across 35 US metropolitan areas.

Main Results:

Google searches for Lipitor decreased while simvastatin searches increased, particularly after Lipitor went off-patent.
Lipitor search volume strongly correlated with global Lipitor revenues.
Increased Medicare service utilization in a community was associated with a higher ratio of Lipitor to simvastatin searches.

Conclusions:

Search engine queries for health information demonstrate significant correlations with pharmaceutical sales and community healthcare utilization.
Digital search data offers a valuable tool for monitoring population health trends and informing healthcare policy and payers.
