Respiratory depth measures the volume of air inhaled or exhaled during a breath. It can vary from shallow to deep and typically remains consistent when a person is at rest or asleep. Junior obstetrics and gynecology (OBGYN) residents perceive fewer learning opportunities and greater workload compared to senior residents. These differences in the operating room educational environment are measurable using the Operating Room Educational Environment Measure (OREEM).

Background:

  • The operating room (OR) is a critical learning environment for surgical residents.
  • Perceptions of the educational environment can significantly impact resident learning and development.
  • Differences in perceived learning experiences between junior and senior residents in OBGYN are not well-characterized.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify and quantify differences in the perception of the OR educational environment between junior and senior OBGYN residents.
  • To assess the reliability and validity of the Operating Room Educational Environment Measure (OREEM) in this context.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional study design was employed.
  • The 40-item Operating Room Educational Environment Measure (OREEM) was administered to 28 OBGYN residents across three hospital sites.
  • OREEM assesses perceptions of the teaching surgeon, learning opportunities, OR atmosphere, and workload; primary outcome was total OREEM score.
