Area of Science:

  • Nursing
  • Psychology
  • Sociology

Background:

  • Interpersonal relationships are crucial in nursing practice.
  • Social exchange and equity theories provide frameworks for understanding these dynamics.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop, validate, and norm a measure of social support, reciprocity, and conflict in interpersonal relationships relevant to nursing.
  • To create an instrument grounded in lived experience and theoretical frameworks.

Main Methods:

  • Qualitative interviews with 44 respondents to generate items.
  • Expert content validation by 11 professionals.
  • Quantitative testing of a 39-item instrument with 340 participants (students, patients, residents).
  • Reliability (internal consistency, test-retest) and validity (factor analysis, theory testing, contrasted groups, multitrait-multimethod) assessments.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • The three subscales (social support, reciprocity, conflict) demonstrated consistent internal consistency and test-retest reliability.
  • Strong evidence of construct validity was found for the social support and conflict subscales.
  • The validity of the reciprocity subscale was equivocal, indicating a need for further research.

Conclusions:

  • The developed instrument shows promise for measuring key interpersonal relationship dimensions in nursing.
  • The social support and conflict subscales are well-validated.
  • Further refinement is needed for the reciprocity subscale to establish its validity.
