Background:

  • Urinary stress incontinence is a prevalent condition with widely varying reported prevalence rates.
  • Variations in prevalence may stem from differing definitions of incontinence and study methodologies.
  • Assessing the effectiveness of surgical interventions like tension-free vaginal tape (TVT) requires reliable outcome measures.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the validity and reliability of the British Society of Urogynaecology's (BSUG) database subjective outcome scores following TVT.
  • To correlate BSUG database scores with changes in the Medical Epidemiologic and Social Aspects of Ageing (MESA) questionnaire scores.
  • To determine if subjective assessments used by the BSUG database accurately reflect TVT treatment outcomes.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of 100 women diagnosed with urodynamic stress incontinence underwent TVT.
  • Participants completed the MESA questionnaire preoperatively and at 6 months postoperatively.
  • BSUG database outcome measures, patient global impression, and stress/urge symptom analyses were collected.

  • 85% of patients reported a significant improvement in their global impression of outcome post-surgery.
  • A 73.89% reduction in mean MESA scores was observed (p < 0.001), indicating symptom improvement.
