Oligodendroglial tumors with 1p/19q loss show varied chemotherapy response. Gene expression profiling identified novel genes linked to chemosensitivity and 1p/19q status in these brain tumors.

  • Unsupervised hierarchical clustering was employed to analyze gene expression patterns and identify tumor subgroups.
  • Main Results:

    • Gene expression profiling revealed greater intra-tumor homogeneity than inter-tumor heterogeneity.
    • 176 genes were differentially expressed, with 164 associated with 1p/19q loss.
    • 94 genes distinguished chemotherapy responders from non-responders, with 12 not linked to 1p/19q status. Novel genes like SSBP2, GFRA1, FAP, and RASD1 were associated with treatment response.

    Conclusions:

    • Gene expression profiling of oligodendroglial tumors can identify subgroups based on 1p/19q status and chemotherapy response.
    • Several novel genes associated with 1p/19q status and treatment response were identified.
    • Further research is warranted to elucidate the role of these genes in oligodendroglial tumor biology and treatment.
