Systemic sclerosis patients frequently experience mood and anxiety disorders, particularly when hospitalized. However, many do not receive adequate psychiatric treatment, highlighting a need for better assessment in this population.
Area of Science:
- Psychiatry
- Rheumatology
- Clinical Psychology
Background:
- Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is a chronic autoimmune disease with significant psychological comorbidities.
- Mood and anxiety disorders are common in patients with chronic illnesses.
Purpose of the Study:
- To determine the prevalence of mood and anxiety disorders in SSc patients.
- To investigate the association between these disorders and clinical features of SSc.
Main Methods:
- 100 SSc patients were assessed using the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI) and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS).
- Data on psychiatric treatment and clinical features were collected concurrently.
Main Results:
- 19% of SSc patients had a current major depressive episode (MDE), and 56% had a lifetime history of MDE.
- 37% of patients were diagnosed with specific anxiety disorders.
- Current MDE was higher in hospitalized patients (28%) compared to others (10%).
- Less than 50% of patients with mood disorders received psychiatric treatment.
- Depression was associated with digestive symptoms in SSc patients.
Conclusions:
- High prevalence of current and lifetime mood and anxiety disorders in SSc patients, especially those hospitalized.
- Inadequate psychiatric treatment rates underscore a critical gap in care.
- Improved screening and assessment for psychiatric disorders in SSc patients are essential.
