Summary

Many acute myocardial infarction patients miss out on crucial thrombolytic therapy. Delays in seeking medical help, due to lack of awareness of heart attack symptoms, are a significant factor. Public education on early intervention is vital.

Area of Science:

  • Cardiology
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Acute myocardial infarction (AMI) is a leading cause of death.
  • Timely administration of thrombolytic therapy significantly improves outcomes in AMI patients.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the rate of thrombolytic therapy administration in AMI patients.
  • To identify reasons for non-administration of thrombolytic therapy, focusing on patient-related delays.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 123 acute myocardial infarction patient cases.
  • Examination of medical records to determine thrombolytic therapy receipt and reasons for non-receipt.

Main Results:

  • Only 18% of AMI patients received thrombolytic therapy.
  • Patient-related time delays in seeking medical attention accounted for 27% of cases where thrombolytic therapy was not administered.

Conclusions:

  • A significant majority of acute myocardial infarction patients do not receive recommended thrombolytic therapy.
  • Lack of public awareness regarding prodromal symptoms and the importance of early intervention contributes to treatment delays.
