Disposable needle guides do not reduce infection risk after transrectal prostate needle biopsy (TPNB). Further large-scale studies are needed to confirm the effect of disposable needle guides on infection rates in TPNB procedures.

Background:
- Transrectal prostate needle biopsy (TPNB) is a common procedure for diagnosing prostate cancer.
- Infectious complications, such as urinary tract infections (UTIs), are a known risk associated with TPNB.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate if using a disposable needle guide decreases the incidence of infectious complications following TPNB.
- To compare infection rates between disposable and reusable needle guides in TPNB.
Main Methods:
- A randomized study involving 55 patients undergoing 10-core TPNB.
- Patients were divided into two groups: one using a disposable needle guide (n=25) and the other a reusable needle guide (n=30).
- All patients received prophylactic antibiotics, and infection rates (bacteriologic and symptomatic UTI) were assessed 48 hours post-biopsy.

Conclusions:
- The use of a disposable needle guide did not significantly reduce the risk of infectious complications after TPNB.
- Larger, randomized studies are required to definitively establish the impact of disposable needle guides on TPNB-related infection rates.
