Background:

Telemedicine, specifically videoconferencing, is increasingly used for remote collaboration between healthcare professionals.
Effective interdisciplinary communication is crucial for optimal patient treatment planning and outcomes.

Observation:

The study analyzed 42 videotaped videoconferences involving general practitioners (GPs) and specialists collaborating on patient care.
A single patient's treatment was tracked across five videoconferences over nine days to examine knowledge-sharing dynamics.

Findings:

Videoconferencing facilitates knowledge exchange and co-production between GPs and specialists.
Information exchange can reinforce existing decisions, while consultations addressing dilemmas bridge knowledge gaps.
Collaborative problem-solving during virtual consultations creates significant learning opportunities in practice.

Implications:

Videoconferencing platforms can enhance interprofessional learning and support evidence-based decision-making in clinical practice.
Integrating virtual collaboration tools may improve the efficiency and effectiveness of specialist-GP partnerships.
This approach highlights the potential for technology to foster continuous professional development and improve patient management.
