Summary

This study evaluated alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels and hepatitis B markers in blood donors to assess post-transfusion hepatitis risk. Elevated ALT levels were common, but their link to non-A non-B hepatitis requires further investigation with specific markers.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To screen blood donors and health personnel for hepatitis markers.
  • To evaluate alanine aminotransferase (ALT) serum levels in relation to hepatitis B markers and alcohol intake.
  • To assess the potential risk of post-transfusion hepatitis.

Main Methods:

  • Screening of 692 individuals (blood donors and health personnel).
  • Measurement of anti-hepatitis B core (anti-HBc) antibodies in 572 subjects.

    • 6% of subjects had ALT levels above 45 u/l.
    • ALT levels did not correlate with anti-HBc positivity or alcohol consumption.

    Conclusions:

    • Hepatitis B markers were low in the screened population.
    • Elevated ALT levels were observed in a subset of subjects.
    • Further research using specific non-A non-B hepatitis markers is needed to clarify the risk associated with elevated ALT levels in post-transfusion hepatitis.
