Reliability and Validity01:29

Reliability and Validity

Reliability and validity are two important considerations that must be made with any type of data collection. Reliability refers to the ability to consistently produce a given result. In the context of psychological research, this would mean that any instruments or tools used to collect data do so in consistent, reproducible ways.
Stability of structures01:14

Stability of structures

In mechanical engineering, the stability of systems under various forces is critical for designing durable and efficient structures. One fundamental way to explore these concepts is by analyzing systems like two rods connected at a pivot point, O, with a torsional spring of spring constant k at the pivot point. This system is similar in appearance to a scissor jack used to change tires on a car. In this case, the arms of the linkage (equivalent to the rods in this system) are entirely vertical,...
Significance Testing: Overview01:04

Significance Testing: Overview

Significance testing is a set of statistical methods used to test whether a claim about a parameter is valid. In analytical chemistry, significance testing is used primarily to determine whether the difference between two values comes from determinate or random errors. The effect of a particular change in the measurement protocol, analyst, or sample itself can cause a deviation from the expected result. In the case of a suspected deviation/outlier, we need to be able to confirm mathematically...
Testing a Claim about Standard Deviation01:19

Testing a Claim about Standard Deviation

A complete procedure to test a claim about population standard deviation or population variance is explained here.
The hypothesis testing for the claim of population standard deviation (or variance) requires the data and samples to be random and unbiased. The population distribution also must be normal. There is no specific requirement on the sample size as the estimation is based on the chi-square distribution.
As a first step, the hypothesis (null and alternative) concerning the claim about...
Stability01:28

Stability

The time response of a linear time-invariant (LTI) system can be divided into transient and steady-state responses. The transient response represents the system's initial reaction to a change in input and diminishes to zero over time. In contrast, the steady-state response is the behavior that persists after the transient effects have faded.
The stability of an LTI system is determined by the roots of its characteristic equation, known as poles. A system is stable if it produces a bounded...
Test for Homogeneity01:23

Test for Homogeneity

The goodness–of–fit test can be used to decide whether a population fits a given distribution, but it will not suffice to decide whether two populations follow the same unknown distribution. A different test, called the test for homogeneity, can be used to conclude whether two populations have the same distribution. To calculate the test statistic for a test for homogeneity, follow the same procedure as with the test of independence. The hypotheses for the test for homogeneity can be stated as...

Summary

This study examined the construct validity of the Stable-2000 and Stable-2007 risk assessment tools in sex offenders. While some correlations were found, the convergence with other measures was lower than anticipated, suggesting further research is needed.

Area of Science:

  • Forensic Psychology
  • Psychometrics
  • Criminology

Background:

  • Assessing risk factors in convicted sex offenders is crucial for effective treatment and recidivism prevention.
  • The construct validity of risk assessment tools like the Stable-2000 and Stable-2007 requires rigorous examination.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the construct validity of the Stable-2000 and Stable-2007 by assessing correlations between their items and independent measures of relevant constructs.
  • To determine the degree of convergence between Stable measures and established indicators of attitudes, interests, and social functioning in sex offenders.

Main Methods:

  • Correlational analyses were conducted between selected items from the Stable-2000 and Stable-2007 and validated independent measures.
  • Two studies utilized convicted sex offender samples to examine associations with measures of beliefs supportive of child molestation, pedophilic interests, intimacy, loneliness, and beliefs supportive of rape.

Main Results:

  • Correlations indicated that Stable items were associated with measures of similar constructs, but the variance explained was often lower than expected.
  • Specific correlations ranged from 4% to 66% of shared variance, with notable differences between Stable-2000 and Stable-2007 for deviant sexual interests.

Conclusions:

  • The findings generally support the association of Stable items with related constructs, yet highlight a need for further validation.
  • More comprehensive research is recommended to fully understand the construct validity of the Stable measures and their utility in identifying dynamic risk factors and treatment targets for sex offenders.
