Summary

Partner-specific condom use consistency measures are more useful for adolescents than global measures. This study compared these methods to improve understanding of adolescent sexual health and consistent condom use.

Background:

Measuring consistent condom use in adolescents is challenging due to varied strategies.
This limits comparability and interpretation of research findings.

Purpose of the Study:

Compare global versus partner-specific condom use consistency measures.
Examine relationships between these measures and key covariates.
Utilize trajectory groups based on condom use stability over time.

Main Methods:

Analyzed self-report data from sexually active adolescent girls (aged 13-17).
Compared global (overall) and partner-specific condom use consistency.
Classified participants into trajectory groups based on condom use at three time points.
Used bivariate methods to compare trajectory groups on baseline and time-varying covariates.

Main Results:

Stability of the primary sex partner differed significantly between global condom use trajectory groups.
Partner-specific trajectory groups showed significant relationships with baseline hormonal use, number of sex partners, and stability of the primary sex partner.
Hormonal use stability trended toward significance in partner-specific groups.

Conclusions:

Partner-specific measures offer greater utility for assessing partner-linked behavior in adolescents.
This approach aids in overcoming measurement challenges in adolescent condom use research.
Findings contribute to a better understanding of adolescent sexual health indicators.
