[Integrating teaching nursing work and citizenship]

• Qualitative case study at a private university in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

• 18 volunteer students participated in the data collection in April 2009.

Purpose:

• To identify and analyze daily conflicts encountered during the specialization course.
• To understand the tensions at the intersection of academic learning and health service practice.
• To explore the nature of conflicts within the professional development context.

Summary:

• Analysis revealed five thematic units of conflict: Integration of Education, Work, and Citizenship; Teamwork dynamics; Permanent Education initiatives; Social Responsibility considerations; and Establishment of the care line.
• The study highlights that the intersection between the academic environment and health services generates inherent tensions and conflicts.
• These conflicts, while often latent, are a consistent feature of the professional development process in this setting.
