Immunoadsorption (IA) effectively treated steroid-unresponsive multiple sclerosis (MS) relapses in 86% of patients. This safe and well-tolerated apheresis method offers an alternative to plasma exchange for managing MS.
Area of Science:
- Neurology
- Immunology
- Biomedical engineering
Context:
- Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic, inflammatory, demyelinating autoimmune disease of the central nervous system.
- Steroid-unresponsive relapses are a significant challenge in MS management.
- Plasma exchange (PE) is an established therapy, but immunoadsorption (IA) offers a selective alternative.
Purpose:
- To evaluate the efficacy and safety of immunoadsorption (IA) for treating steroid-unresponsive multiple sclerosis (MS) relapses.
- To compare the outcomes of IA with established therapies like PE.
Summary:
- A retrospective analysis of 14 patients with steroid-unresponsive MS relapses treated with tryptophan IA.
- Patients received six IA treatments over two weeks, with efficacy assessed by Kurtzke scale (EDSS, FS) and visual acuity.
- 12 out of 14 patients (86%) showed clinically relevant improvement in major relapse symptoms; no patient worsened.
Impact:
- Immunoadsorption (IA) demonstrated significant improvements in EDSS, FS, and visual acuity in MS patients.
- IA was safe, well-tolerated, and did not result in severe adverse events.
- IA offers an effective and safe alternative to PE for MS relapses, avoiding the risks associated with plasma product administration.
