  • Co-occurrence of autoimmune diseases in one patient is possible.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine if scleroderma patients exhibit a higher prevalence of celiac disease.
  • To assess the need for routine celiac disease screening in scleroderma patients with diarrhea.

Main Methods:

  • Indirect immunofluorescence assay used to detect IgA-EmA autoantibodies.
  • Study included 105 patients with scleroderma and 97 healthy volunteers.

Main Results:

  • No statistically significant difference in IgA-EmA autoantibody prevalence was found between scleroderma patients and controls.
  • The study did not identify an increased association between scleroderma and celiac disease.

Conclusions:

  • Routine screening for celiac disease in scleroderma patients presenting with diarrhea is not recommended.
  • Screening should be reserved for cases with specific clinical indications suggestive of celiac disease.
