Summary

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) language paradigms, specifically word production (WP) and reverse word reading (RWR), effectively activate language areas in Persian speakers. These tasks are suitable for presurgical planning and optimizing clinical protocols.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate five fMRI language tasks for their efficacy in activating language areas in Persian speakers.
  • To identify the most effective tasks for a clinically useful fMRI protocol.
  • To compare the performance of word generation, object naming, word reading, word production, and reverse word reading tasks.

Main Methods:

  • Sixteen healthy, right-handed, Persian-speaking volunteers participated.
  • Participants underwent fMRI scans while performing five distinct language tasks: word generation (WG), object naming (ON), word reading (WR), word production (WP), and reverse word reading (RWR).
  • Group analysis assessed activation of classical language areas, and laterality index (LI) was calculated for each subject and task.

Main Results:

  • Word production (WP), reverse word reading (RWR), and word generation (WG) robustly activated language areas in the dominant hemisphere.
  • Object naming (ON) and word reading (WR) tasks were less effective in delineating language areas.
  • WP showed the highest activation intensity in the frontal lobe (including Broca's area), while RWR demonstrated the highest lateralization index (LI).

Conclusions:

  • Persian versions of WG, WP, and RWR tasks reliably localize language-related areas in Persian speakers.
  • These tasks hold potential for presurgical planning in the Persian population.
  • WP and RWR are recommended for future research to establish optimized protocols for various language speakers.
