Summary

Acupuncture points Futu (LI 18), Hegu (LI 4), and Neiguan (PC6) share overlapping nerve pathways with the thyroid gland in rats. Acupuncture stimulation also increases connexin 43 expression in these acupoint regions.

Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Acupuncture Research
  • Surgical Anesthesia

Context:

  • Acupuncture is explored as an adjunct for surgical anesthesia.
  • Understanding the neuroanatomical basis of acupoint efficacy is crucial.
  • Thyroid surgery presents specific challenges for anesthesia management.

Purpose:

  • To investigate the afferent projections of acupoints PC6, LI4, and LI18.
  • To determine the neural pathways involved in acupuncture anesthesia for thyroid surgery.
  • To analyze the expression of connexin 43 in acupoint regions following stimulation.

Summary:

  • Horseradish peroxidase and fluorescent tracers revealed overlapping afferent projections from acupoints PC6, LI4, LI18, and the thyroid region to dorsal root ganglia (DRGs) C1-C8 and T1, primarily converging in C3-C5.

  • Bifurcate innervation was observed, indicating DRG neurons innervate both acupoints and the thyroid gland.
  • Immunohistochemistry showed significantly upregulated cutaneous connexin 43 expression in acupoint regions (LI18, PC6, LI4, ST36) after acupuncture stimulation.
  • Impact:

    • Provides insights into the neurophysiological mechanisms of acupuncture anesthesia for thyroid surgery.
    • Suggests that acupoint stimulation may modulate neural pathways involved in pain perception and anesthesia.
    • Highlights the role of connexin 43 in the response to acupuncture.
