Summary

Giant peritoneal simple mesothelial cysts are rare but treatable. Complete surgical excision is the recommended treatment for these abdominal tumors, offering a successful outcome with no recurrence.

Background:

Peritoneal simple mesothelial cysts are rare mesenteric cysts of mesothelial origin.
Typically measuring a few centimeters to 10 cm, they are often asymptomatic.
Non-specific symptoms can complicate pre-operative diagnosis.

Purpose of the Study:

To present a case of a giant peritoneal simple mesothelial cyst.
To highlight the diagnostic challenges and successful management of this rare condition.

Main Methods:

A 21-year-old woman presented with a 2-year history of vague abdominal discomfort and distention.
Imaging revealed a large cystic mass (35 × 20 × 10 cm).
The cyst was completely excised via midline laparotomy; histopathology confirmed a simple mesothelial cyst.

Main Results:

The patient underwent successful surgical excision of a giant peritoneal simple mesothelial cyst.
The postoperative course was uneventful.
No recurrence was observed during follow-up.

Conclusions:

Peritoneal simple mesothelial cysts are rare abdominal tumors that require consideration in the differential diagnosis of cystic lesions.
Complete surgical excision is the definitive treatment of choice.
