Background:

  • Colon cancer is a leading cause of cancer deaths globally and the top digestive cancer in Morocco.
  • Right-sided and left-sided colon cancers exhibit distinct characteristics influencing disease progression and prognosis.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify epidemiological, clinical, and pathological factors affecting perioperative and prognostic outcomes in right-sided versus left-sided colon cancer.
  • To compare outcomes between these two distinct colon cancer sub-types.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective cohort study from January 2012 to December 2020.
  • Inclusion of 277 patients, divided into right colon cancer (n=99) and left colon cancer (n=178) groups.
  • Analysis of epidemiological data, clinical characteristics, and pathological factors.

Main Results:

  • Average age was 57.4 years; male predominance observed (sex ratio 1.3).
  • Higher lymph node involvement in left-sided colon cancer (65%) vs. right-sided (34%).
  • Five-year overall survival: 87% for right-sided, 96.5% for left-sided. Stage III/IV left-sided cancer showed better survival (p=0.029). Age over 61 predicted poor recurrence-free survival (HR=3.245; p=0.023).

  • Differences in outcomes between right-sided and left-sided colon cancer warrant further investigation.
  • Personalized treatment approaches may improve survival rates for colon cancer patients.
