This case study highlights a rare instance of breast cancer metastasizing to eye muscles, initially mistaken for a pseudotumor. Prompt diagnosis and treatment led to complete remission, emphasizing the importance of considering metastasis in similar presentations.
Area of Science:
- Oncology
- Ophthalmology
- Pathology
Background:
- Metastatic disease to the orbit is uncommon.
- Lobular carcinoma of the breast is known for its diverse metastatic patterns.
Observation:
- A 61-year-old female presented with external ophthalmoplegia and diplopia, initially diagnosed as a pseudotumor.
- Histopathology revealed bilateral breast metastases of lobular carcinoma involving multiple extraocular muscles.
Findings:
- The patient underwent incisional biopsy, radiotherapy, and hormonal therapy.
- Complete remission was achieved after 18 months of hormonal therapy, with improved ocular motility and resolved diplopia.
Implications:
- Extraocular muscle involvement by breast carcinoma metastasis is a rare entity.
- This diagnosis should be considered in patients with a history of breast carcinoma presenting with ophthalmoplegia.
