This study proposes a new electronic health record (EHR) architecture for Colombia, focusing on open, scalable, and interoperable systems. The architecture was successfully tested in a pilot tele-consultation project involving dental EHR exchange.
Area of Science:
- Health Informatics
- Computer Science
- Information Systems
Background:
- National electronic health record (EHR) infrastructures require well-defined system architectures.
- Architectures must be open, scalable, flexible, user-friendly, trustworthy, and standards-based.
Purpose of the Study:
- To propose a reference architecture for implementing an integrated EHR system in Colombia.
- To leverage existing architectural models and EHR standards for semantic interoperability.
Main Methods:
- Utilized the General Computerized Model (GCM) as an architectural framework.
- Defined a set of services and interfaces for clinical document exchange.
- Tested the proposed architecture in a pilot tele-consultation project.
Main Results:
- Developed an open, scalable, flexible, and semantically interoperable EHR infrastructure.
- Successfully exchanged dental EHRs in a pilot tele-consultation setting in Colombia.
Conclusions:
- The proposed reference architecture provides a viable model for integrated EHR implementation in Colombia.
- The architecture supports seamless exchange of clinical documents, enhancing healthcare interoperability.
