A loss of practice effects on cognitive tests may indicate a worse prognosis for individuals with amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI). This finding suggests practice effects are important indicators of cognitive change over time.
Area of Science:
- Neuroscience
- Cognitive Psychology
Background:
- Practice effects on cognitive tests can help characterize amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI).
- These effects may offer predictive insights into cognitive changes over time.
Purpose of the Study:
- To test the hypothesis that a reduction in practice effects predicts a poorer prognosis in aMCI patients.
Main Methods:
- A longitudinal, observational study followed a community-based cohort for 1 year.
- Participants included cognitively intact older adults and two groups of aMCI patients differing in their short-term practice effects (large vs. minimal).
- Neuropsychological tests were used for assessment.
Main Results:
- After adjusting for age and baseline cognition, the aMCI group with minimal practice effects showed significantly worse outcomes.
- This poorer performance was observed after 1 year on measures of immediate and delayed memory, language, and overall cognition.
Conclusions:
- The study suggests that a loss of short-term practice effects is associated with a worse prognosis in individuals with aMCI.
- Further replication in larger samples is recommended to confirm these findings.
