Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effectiveness of electrical stunning via brain-inserted electrodes in slaughter pigs.

Main Methods:

  • Electroencephalography (EEG) and electrocardiography (ECG) monitored 37 pigs during stunning with varying voltages (25V, 25V + relaxation current).
  • Pigs were stunned using electrodes shot into the brain.
  • Shoulder hemorrhages were assessed postmortem in experimental and practical condition groups (25, 50, 75V).

Main Results:

  • Pigs showed no reaction to electrode insertion but exhibited epileptiform seizures post-stunning.
  • Heart rate significantly increased, with observed arrhythmias.
  • No hemorrhages were found in 27% of carcasses; others had minor hemorrhages.
  • Practical conditions suggested ~87V (511mA) for effective stunning; lower voltages reduced hemorrhages.
  • 25V was sufficient for direct brain contact, but ~90V is recommended for practical application.

Conclusions:

  • Electrical stunning via brain electrodes is effective in inducing insensibility in slaughter pigs.
