In children with anisometropic amblyopia, better stereoacuity after treatment is linked to better pre-treatment stereoacuity and visual acuity. However, many children still have poorer stereoacuity than their peers even after visual deficits resolve.

  • Multivariate regression analysis to determine factors associated with baseline and outcome stereoacuity using the Randot Preschool Stereoacuity test.

Main Results:

  • Better baseline stereoacuity correlated with better baseline amblyopic eye acuity, less anisometropia, and astigmatic anisometropia.
  • Improved outcome stereoacuity was associated with better baseline stereoacuity and improved amblyopic eye acuity post-treatment.
  • Even with resolved visual acuity deficits, many children had subnormal stereoacuity compared to age-matched controls.

Conclusions:

  • In children with anisometropic amblyopia (20/40-20/100), posttreatment stereoacuity depends on baseline stereoacuity and posttreatment visual acuity.
  • Treatment for anisometropic amblyopia may not fully restore stereoacuity to normal levels in many children.
