Area of Science:

  • Speech-language pathology
  • Educational psychology
  • Child development

Background:

  • Stuttering significantly impacts children in educational settings.
  • Developing effective support resources requires input from all stakeholders.
  • Existing resources may not fully address the diverse needs of children who stutter.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify essential information for supporting children who stutter in schools.
  • To develop evidence-based resources informed by user perspectives.
  • To enhance the educational experience for children who stutter.

Main Methods:

  • A six-stage Delphi study was conducted.
  • Four expert panels were formed: children who stutter (CWS), young people who stutter, parents, and education staff.
  • Consensus was sought on information crucial for supporting CWS.

Main Results:

  • 538 statements were generated and reduced to 276.
  • A 64.2% response rate was achieved for rating questionnaires.
  • The top 32 highly-rated statements with consensus were selected for resource development.

Conclusions:

  • Involving service users (CWS, parents, educators) is vital for creating effective resources.
  • The Delphi methodology ensured representative input from diverse perspectives.
  • The resulting resources possess high content validity and are predicted to meet user needs.
