This study introduces an efficient method to correct ectopic beats in heart rate variability (HRV) analysis. The technique improves power spectrum density estimation accuracy for better HRV analysis.
Area of Science:
- Cardiology
- Biomedical Engineering
- Signal Processing
Background:
- Ectopic beats significantly impact the accuracy of heart rate variability (HRV) analysis.
- Existing methods for handling ectopic beats in HRV may not provide sufficient accuracy or real-time performance.
Purpose of the Study:
- To develop and evaluate an efficient method for correcting ectopic beats in HRV analysis.
- To improve the accuracy of power spectrum density (PSD) estimation in HRV data corrupted by ectopic beats.
Main Methods:
- A novel method based on trend correlation of the heart timing signal was proposed.
- Predictors for R-R interval (RRI) values at ectopic beat times were constructed using weighted calculations and slope estimations from preceding normal RRIs.
- Ectopic beats were detected and replaced using these predictors.
Main Results:
- The proposed method demonstrated reduced error in frequency indexes after ectopic beat correction compared to other methods, validated on simulated and clinical data.
- Performance was assessed using power spectrum density (PSD) estimation against standard values for simulated data and adjacent ectopic-free data for clinical data.
Conclusions:
- The developed method effectively corrects ectopic beats, leading to improved PSD estimation in HRV analysis.
- The technique offers high accuracy and real-time capabilities, crucial for accurately assessing sinus node modulation.

Correlation between ECG and Cardiac Cycle
A cardiac action potential originates in the SA node and spreads throughout the atria and the AV node in approximately 0.03 seconds. This results in the P wave in an ECG and triggers atrial contraction. The action potential is then briefly slowed at the AV node, allowing the atria to contract and fill the ventricles with blood before...
