Summary

Faculty development in clinical simulation increased its use in Texas nursing programs. This led to more graduates and increased student enrollment, addressing workforce needs.

Healthcare Simulation Pedagogy

Background:

Texas faces nursing workforce shortages, necessitating increased nursing graduates.
A 2008 strategic plan highlighted the need to expand nursing education capacity in Texas.
Clinical simulation was identified as a key strategy to enhance nursing education.

Purpose of the Study:

To address the need for faculty development in clinical simulation within the Central Texas Region.
To facilitate the adoption and expansion of simulation-based learning in nursing programs.

Main Methods:

A collaborative project involving 12 nursing programs and practice partners.
Four regional workshops were conducted to train faculty in clinical simulation.
Development of six interprofessional simulation scenarios and identification of simulation experts.

Main Results:

80% of respondents reported an increase in the use of simulation in their nursing programs.
30% of programs reported increased student enrollment attributed to enhanced simulation capabilities.
Successful identification of clinical simulation experts across participating institutions.

Conclusions:

Faculty development in clinical simulation is effective in increasing its adoption and use in nursing education.
Enhanced simulation capacity can contribute to increased nursing student enrollment and address workforce needs.
Interprofessional collaboration is crucial for successful implementation of simulation-based training.
